World’s First 5G Embedded Processor in Hisilicon Kirin 990 at IFA 2019

Huawei is world second most smartphone maker company. But it is not only a smartphone company. They also manufacture processors for their smartphones. Huawei has launched a 5G ready Processor, which is embedded in the new Flagship Chipset HIsilicon Kirin 990. They have launched it in IFA Berlin 2019. It is Powerful chipset than others in the market.


It is based on 7nm technology and it is first processor by Hisilicon Kirin to be built on 7nm technology. Huawei says that that it has a modem which increases maximum Download speed upto 2.3 Gbps, and a maximum upload speed of 1.25Gbps. This processor is manufactured on ARM Cortex CPU cores design .


                 The Kirin 990 5G is designed on ARM’s chip designs for both CPU and GPU. The Chipset comes with 8 cores, where 2 Cores are of Cortex-A76 @2.85Ghz,2x are Cortex-A76 @2.36Ghz and other 4 cores are Cortex-A55 @1.95Ghz.In the Presentation Huawei showed that it surpasses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 with 10% in single-core and 9% in mutli-core. Which is amazing from the company Huawei. They have also launched a non 5G processor as Kirin 990, where it comes with low frequency cores as 2x are @2.36Ghz and 4x are @1.86Ghz and Huawei says that it more power efficient than the 5G variant.

                  As it is manufactured on 7nm+EUV technology it is more power efficient and powerful than its pre-dessessor. For graphics they have used the Mali-G76 MP10 GPU and this time the GPU consists of 16 cores for the first time in the smartphone chipset. Which will make the Graphic experience Butter smoothly. The company said that it is 6% better than the Snapdragon’s Adreno 640 GPU. The 5G varaint has 10.3 billion transistor and it higher than any other SoC’s where this many transistors are used, while 4G has approximately 8 billion.


AS the older chipset has Dual NPU support, but after their issue with US. They have started manufacturing the NPU on their Architecture which is DA VINCI. They have used this architecture for the AI chipset. It enhances the AI capabilities and increases Graphics capabilities. They are working hard to make their SoC more power than other SoC makers. It uses the standard logic used in CPU’s-Big core for high AI demanding works and Tiny-Core for less AI demanding .Kirin 990 5G variant has 2 Big core and non 5G has only one Big core, remaining are same.
